Our Efforts
Starting in August of 2016, the City of Laurel participated in the development of a new 5 year Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) in conjunction with Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management (PG OEM). This comprehensive all hazards plan is a requirement associated with receipt of certain Federal mitigation grant program funds administered by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). Additionally, this plan provides a strong foundation in the reduction of risks associated with all kinds of hazards.
The HMP is a comprehensive document which includes the Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) which serves as the fact base for the hazard mitigation plan.
The HIRA consist of three parts:
- Identify which hazards could affect Prince George’s County and the City of Laurel.
- Profile hazard events and determine what areas and community assets are the most vulnerable to damage from these hazards, and
- Estimate losses and prioritize the potential risks to the community.
The HMP was prepared by a Prince George’s County and City of Laurel Multi-Jurisdictional HMP Committee which consisted of a select group of professionals and experts representing the various departments, agencies, and groups from Prince George’s County, City of Laurel, Maryland State and Federal government.
This HMP sets the stage for the City of Laurel and Prince George’s County to continue to long-term disaster resistance through identification of actions that will, over time, continue to reduce the risk exposure of people and property to all hazards, both natural and man-made.
